What is 24K gold?

24K gold is the purest type of gold available. Unlike 10K, 14K and 18K gold, which are all made from an alloy of gold and other metals, 24K gold is made of 100% pure gold. This gives it a rich, bright and powerful color that immediately attracts the eye. While 24K gold is extremely valuable, it isn’t widely used for engagement rings.

What does 24K stand for?

Well 14K stands for 14 carat gold. So logic would be that 24K stands for 24 carat gold. I have never seen this stamped on any jewelry. I have gold chains that are 14 and 18K. 24 carat gold is pure or 100% gold which is rather soft making it a poor choice for jewelry.

How do I know if my gold jewelry is 24K?

You should clearly see 24k or the numbers 9999 or 999 engraved on the piece. On jewelry the number may be small and concealed, but it should still be visible. You may encounter some other markings on your gold jewelry. For example, some pieces may be branded "24kP". This indicates that the item in question is plumb gold and is 24 karats exactly.

How much gold is in a gold bar?

The standard gold bar held and traded internationally by central banks and bullion dealers is the Good Delivery bar with a 400 ozt (12.4 kg; 438.9 oz) nominal weight. However, its precise gold content is permitted to vary between 350 ozt (10.9 kg; 384.0 oz) and 430 ozt (13.4 kg; 471.8 oz). The minimum purity required is 99.5% gold.
